The GlobalNOC is looking for senior level network engineers who like to work in a team on advanced long-haul networking that enables scientific discoveries and supports the education mission of hundreds of colleges and university around the country. Established in 1998, The GlobalNOC at Indiana University now runs over 20 science, research and education networks across the country, including the Internet2 Network. Our Network Engineering teams are responsible for the entirety of the network development lifecycle, from taking concepts from vision to reality, to operating them, to educating our communities. We are network architects, capacity planners, technical incident managers, and network operators all in one. We have a deep curiosity about networking, and a commitment to the mission of demonstrably advancing science, research, and education.
Our ideal engineer comes to us with a strong background in WAN, including some experience in Layers 1-3, experience taking abstract customer requirements and developing resultant network designs and plans, a strong interest and ability to diagnose network issues, and an interest in continuous network and process improvements. Experience and interest in SDN, network management theory, or network automation are especially useful.
Responsibilities of the job include:
Work with our network partners like Internet2 to develop and implement new services and designs
Work on service requests and escalated incidents
Proactively influence our project roadmap with network enhancement ideas
Collaborate with our software and systems groups to provide input to networking tools
Collaborate with peers to refine team processes and workflow
Provide technical leadership to junior staff via technical instruction and peer review
BS in CS or equivalent experience
5+ years of professional network operations, support, and architecture experience
Solid knowledge of TCP/IP and networking fundamentals
Solid understanding of routing protocols/technologies such as BGP, IS-IS, OSPF, MPLS
Experience in completing networking projects from theory to final implementation
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to handle multiple priorities and constantly changing demands and work effectively in a multitasking environment
Experience supporting and engineering multiple layers of the OSI model: optical networking, ethernet switching, and BGP-based WAN IP networking.
Experience working with chassis-based carrier-grade equipment from multiple vendors including Cisco, Juniper, and Brocade.
Experience with the installation and maintenance of networking or other computer hardware
Ability to conduct training and deliver presentations
Experience with Software Defined Networking (SDN), e.g. OpenFlow
